Skin Clinics in Gangnam:
Dermatology, Anti-Aging and How the Market Compares

Pillar Guide·10 min read

Gangnam is where a large share of Seoul’s dermatology and aesthetic clinics cluster, a few blocks apart, from clinics treating acne and rosacea to full-service anti-aging practices spanning injectables and energy-based devices. Understanding what that density actually means, and how the market compares to clinics abroad, matters more than any single clinic’s reputation.

What actually makes Gangnam’s skin clinic market different from clinics abroad? Mainly three things: a dense cluster of clinics in one district, new devices that tend to reach clinic menus soon after launch, and prices that each clinic must post and cannot exceed. Dermatology clinics there often handle a broad menu of medical and cosmetic concerns in a single visit, and anti-aging clinics lean toward combination plans that layer injectables, energy-based devices and collagen-stimulating treatments. The density and device observations are ours rather than measured rankings. None of this makes Korea automatically better than treatment abroad. It means the market works differently, which is worth understanding before comparing a specific price or clinic.

What Makes Gangnam’s
Skin Clinic Market Different

Gangnam’s clinic density stands out to most visitors: providers cluster tightly in one district and compete directly on technology, specialization, and visible pricing. That density can bring practical advantages, such as more clinics to compare within a short trip and clinics that focus on a narrow set of procedures. It also means quality varies more widely than the district’s reputation alone would suggest, which is true of any market this concentrated, not unique to Korea. Patients who already know which treatment they want can jump straight to a specific guide, like laser treatment in Korea.

Gangnam vs.
Skin Clinics Abroad

Comparing Gangnam to skin clinic markets abroad comes down to a few consistent differences, not a simple better-or-worse verdict. Many clinics that regularly see international patients also offer a remote consultation first, letting you get a preliminary assessment and estimate before committing to travel. Because anti-aging plans often span several visits and treatment types, how a market approaches combination treatment matters more there than for a single, one-off procedure.

Dermatologist’s Clinic or
General Practice?

In Korea, any licensed doctor may treat skin, so a clinic offering acne care or lasers is not necessarily run by a dermatologist. The clinic’s name is the first clue. Only a clinic opened by a board-certified dermatologist may put “dermatology” (피부과) into its official name, as in “OO Dermatology Clinic” (OO피부과의원). A clinic run by a doctor without that certification may still list dermatology as one of the subjects it treats (진료과목), but that listing must be printed no larger than half the size of the clinic’s own name.

Korean newspapers have reported that these signboards still confuse patients, and the health ministry has announced a rule change, planned from late 2026, restricting how newly opened or relocated clinics display treated subjects on their main sign. Until then, ask the clinic directly whether the treating doctor is a board-certified dermatologist. If you read Korean, the Korean Dermatologist Association has a specialist check page.

A specialist is not automatically better for every cosmetic procedure, but for medical conditions such as eczema, rosacea or a changing mole, it is reasonable to ask for one.

04

Dermatology Clinics:
Medical and Cosmetic Concerns

Gangnam dermatology clinics generally handle both medical skin conditions, like acne, eczema, and rosacea, and cosmetic concerns like pigmentation and texture. The range of services at any given clinic varies, so it’s worth confirming whether a clinic treats your specific concern rather than assuming based on general reputation. Patients dealing with a specific condition like acne may want to confirm a clinic’s experience with that exact concern before booking.

05

Anti-Aging Clinics:
The Treatment Mix and Timeline

Anti-aging clinics in Gangnam range from single-treatment specialists to full-service practices. A full-service anti-aging clinic typically offers injectables like Botox and filler, energy-based tightening devices, and collagen-stimulating treatments like microneedling, since most aging concerns involve more than one underlying cause. Clinics that only offer one category of treatment may recommend it even when it isn’t the best fit for your specific concern.

A comprehensive anti-aging plan typically unfolds over several months, combining treatments with different timelines, like immediate filler results alongside gradually building collagen-based improvements, and maintenance is often built into the plan. Expecting a gradual process is more realistic than expecting everything to change after one visit.

06

Safety Checks
Before a Combined Plan

A plan that mixes injectables and devices carries the risks of each part, so ask about them one by one rather than accepting a single reassurance for the whole package.

  • Filler: the US FDA warns that filler injected into a blood vessel by accident can cause tissue death, vision problems including blindness, and stroke. Ask who injects, how they reduce that risk, and what the clinic keeps on hand to respond if it happens.
  • Botulinum toxin: it should not be injected into an area with an active infection, and the clinic needs to know about any neuromuscular condition you have.
  • Lasers and other energy devices: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark patches after treatment) is more common in darker skin, which changes device choice and settings.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: the safety of dermal fillers has not been evaluated in these groups, so elective anti-aging treatment is usually postponed.
  • Medicines: tell the clinic about blood thinners, isotretinoin and any history of cold sores before injectables or laser work.

First visit at a glance

Bookings typically start with an email or messaging app inquiry, sometimes including photos of your concern, followed by either a video consultation or a scheduled in-person visit once you arrive. Arrive a little early to complete any paperwork, bring any relevant medical history or prior treatment records, and expect the visit to start with a conversation about your history and goals before any procedure is discussed. A good clinic explains options rather than pushing a single treatment, and sends you home with clear aftercare instructions and a way to ask follow-up questions, often by messaging app or email.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Do Gangnam skin clinics have English-speaking staff?
Many clinics that regularly see international patients have English-speaking coordinators or dedicated foreign-patient desks, but this varies clinic to clinic. It’s worth confirming language support directly before booking rather than assuming it based on the clinic’s location.
Can I use my home country’s insurance at a clinic in Gangnam?
Some clinics can provide documentation to help with reimbursement claims, but direct billing to a foreign insurer is uncommon. Most international patients pay at the time of treatment and settle any reimbursement with their insurer afterward, so ask the clinic what documentation it can provide to support a claim.
How do I book an appointment from outside Korea?
Clinics that work with international patients typically accept bookings by email, messaging apps, or through a patient coordinator, often starting with photos of your concern or a video consultation. This lets you get a preliminary treatment plan and cost estimate before you travel.
Can I walk in without an appointment?
Walk-ins are uncommon at busier Gangnam clinics because schedules fill up with booked consultations, so arriving with an appointment already set is strongly recommended, especially if you’re visiting from abroad with limited time.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring any recent medical records related to your skin, a list of current medications and supplements, and photos of past treatments if relevant. If you plan to seek insurance reimbursement, bring any documentation your insurer requires as well.
What conditions do Gangnam dermatology clinics commonly treat?
Acne, eczema, rosacea, and pigmentation are among the most common concerns, alongside general skin health checkups. Not every clinic handles every condition equally well, so it’s worth confirming experience with your specific issue.
What does follow-up care look like after I return home?
Clinics accustomed to international patients often offer follow-up by messaging app or email to check on your progress and adjust aftercare instructions. Confirm this is available before you leave, especially for treatments with an ongoing recovery period.
Do anti-aging clinics in Gangnam offer hormone therapy?
Some full-service clinics do, but hormone therapy carries its own risks and should be managed by a qualified physician with proper monitoring rather than treated as a routine add-on. Ask specifically about the physician’s qualifications for this particular treatment.
Is it safe to combine multiple anti-aging treatments in one visit?
Combining treatments is common, but not every combination is appropriate for the same visit, particularly when it involves multiple aggressive procedures on the same area. An experienced clinic will sequence and space treatments appropriately.
Do lifestyle factors affect anti-aging treatment results?
Sun protection, sleep, and overall skin health all influence how well treatments perform and how long results last. A clinic that discusses these alongside procedures, rather than ignoring them, is giving you a fuller picture.
How can I get transparent pricing for a multi-treatment plan?
Ask for an itemized written estimate covering each treatment separately rather than accepting a single bundled price. This makes it easier to understand what you’re actually paying for and to compare against other clinics.
How do I verify a practitioner’s credentials?
Ask directly about their training and experience with the specific treatments you’re considering, and whether the treating doctor is a board-certified dermatologist. Don’t hesitate to request documentation; a transparent clinic will answer this without hesitation.

Sources &
Verification Notes

The comparisons above are market observations rather than measurements, so here is what actually sits behind them, and what we could not source.

  • Scale and concentration: Korea treated 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025, about 72% more than the 1,170,467 of 2024, and 87.2% of them went to Seoul. Dermatology has consistently been the largest treatment category, at 62.9% of the 2025 total (about 1.31 million patients), up from 56.6% in 2024 and well ahead of plastic surgery at 11.2% (Ministry release of 24 April 2026). That Seoul concentration is the measurable part of the “Gangnam density” impression. Sources: Ministry of Health and Welfare, KHIDI.
  • Why “promotional pricing is highly visible” is a legal fact, not merely an impression: under Article 45 of Korea’s Medical Service Act every clinic must post its own non-covered prices where patients can see them, and may not charge above the posted amount. That posted list is enforceable, so ask for it and get quotes in writing; for a multi-treatment plan, ask for a written, itemised quote.
  • Why we give no price comparison: Korea runs a national system publishing clinic-level prices for non-covered treatments, but we checked its published item list and cosmetic and aesthetic procedures are not in it. It covered 693 largely therapeutic items in 2025; searches for botulinum toxin, fillers and cosmetic surgery return nothing. There is therefore no official Korean price dataset to compare against another country’s. Non-covered price disclosure portal.
  • A regulatory difference worth knowing before you compare clinics: any licensed Korean physician may legally perform cosmetic procedures, including anti-aging injections and device treatments; board certification in dermatology is not required to operate a laser or inject a filler. What a non-specialist may not do is present the clinic as a dermatology specialty clinic. This is one of the widest gaps between what a clinic’s marketing implies and what its licensing actually guarantees. The naming and signage rules in section 03, and the planned change for new clinics, are described in Hankook Ilbo (June 2026, Korean). The specialist check page is run by the Korean Dermatologist Association (Korean only).
  • Checking a clinic’s foreign-patient registration: a clinic that actively recruits foreign patients, for example through agencies or coordinators, must register with the Ministry of Health and Welfare. To register, a clinic needs at least one board-certified specialist in each department it offers to foreign patients and malpractice liability cover of at least 100 million won a year (Doctors News, 22 June 2017). The register is public and searchable in English: MedicalKorea registered institutions. The rule covers recruiting, so a clinic can still see a foreign visitor who walks in without it; a listing simply tells you those two conditions were met. If a clinic advertises to you from abroad but is not on it, ask why.
  • Safety points above: filler and pregnancy statements follow the US FDA dermal filler page; the toxin contraindication follows the US prescribing information for Botox Cosmetic; darker-skin pigment risk after laser is reported in a 2024 JAAD International study.
  • What we could not verify: we found no published dataset comparing clinic density, device adoption speed or pricing between Korea and any other country. The comparisons in this article are drawn from what the markets visibly do, not from a study measuring them, and should be read that way.

What This Page Can and Cannot Tell You

This page describes how Gangnam’s clinic market, including its dermatology and anti-aging clinics, is organised in general terms. It does not rate individual clinics, and the registration and price-posting rules above were last checked in September 2026. Clinic practices change often, and no single page covers every provider or device: what a specific clinic offers, who treats you and what it costs can differ, so confirm each point with the clinic.
